We would like to welcome you to our church with a little bit of history about us.
First Baptist Church began with the efforts and determination of three faithful women who organized a society known as the "Earnest Workers" in 1897. These women believed that Billings needed a Baptist church and so helped organize a meeting of known Baptists in the Billings area in August of 1898. The church was organized and chartered on October 9, 1898, with 18 members.
Many difficulties faced the young church. The first pastor, Rev. L.G. Limes, commuted between Billings and Basin, Wyoming, a distance of about 150 miles, to conduct services twice a month that were being held in the Yellowstone County Courthouse. The distance and difficulty caused the pastor to resign, leaving the small congregation with no pastor, no church building, and few finances in 1899.
In 1903, the first church building was completed in the 100 block of North 29th Street with 43 members. By October 1923 a new church was needed and built as the membership outgrew the original church building's capacity. This is the present-day facility located at 218 North 34th Street. The congregation met in the fellowship hall for services until the sanctuary as it is today was built in 1949.
From the beginning there have been 19 pastors that have served First Baptist Church of Billings. Our current pastor, Rev. Ross Lieuallen has lead the congregation since the year 2000.
In 2023, we celebrated our 125th anniversary as a gathered fellowship in Christ.
First Baptist Church of Billings is affiliated with American Baptist Churches, USA, and Mission Northwest, a regional association of churches committed to developing churches that connect people with Jesus Christ, and to the strengthening of each church's mission of making disciples of all nations. Global needs and missions take a very high priority within our church outreach, with intense priority to our local area, our state and region, our country, and throughout the world. We currently support missionaries in Thailand and Mexico to date.
